Week 14 Chapter 12 Discussion 1

My birthday is in June, so my horoscope sign is Gemini. I read two online daily horoscope updates for Tuesday, November 13. Turns out it is pretty accurate, even though I have just started my day. I have work tomorrow in early morning and I have to process quite a fair amount of paperwork. Moreover, I have been worried since last week, because I have to present a project to my boss tomorrow. The two daily horoscope websites suggest me to take more breaks from working and be brave to say whatever I want. Along with some irrelevant information such as let my personality shine. People take those words in because they either need advices or think it is truthful.  I do not believe in daily horoscope, even though sometimes it is pretty accurate and could predict what would happen. Those horoscope updates make a very broad statement to describe your fortune, which has no supporting scientific evidence to back where did those words come from.

Thank you for reading!

  1. Mine turned our kind of accurate too. I say “kind of” because my horoscope today, for November 13, applies more for yesterday. Yeah, I also agree that I think people check their horoscopes for hope or for a little encouragement sometimes. Or maybe just for fun. I used to read the horoscopes like in newspapers or magazines when I was younger just because I thought they were real back then or they were fun. But now, I don’t believe in them even though sometimes it does “predict” or relate to what happens to us on whatever day it may be.

  2. Hello Adrian,
I really like the ending of your post, which stated "Those horoscope updates make a very broad statement to describe your fortune, which has no supporting scientific evidence to back where did those words come from". I agree with you here there is nothing to prove to me or you that we should rely on horoscopes to predict or guide our future. I, like yourself, have no real belief in horoscopes. Stating that means that to me horoscopes seem pointless buy nevertheless they are very popular in our nation. I can accurately say that because horoscopes have hundreds of websites, they appear in print (magazines and newspapers), and some people call fortune cookies a type of horoscope. Thanks for the great post Adrian.

    Heisenberg.

  3. I feel like horoscopes are never true, but someone we make it true. This is because when we read something we try to make it relate to us. For example, if the horoscope says that you will have a bad day, and something bad happens to you, you may think “oh this is what will ruin my day today.” Even though it isn’t really a big deal, you make it one because you want the horoscope to be right or you try to make it fit for you. I feel like not the same thing can happen to all Libras or all Gemini’s out there.

  4. I agree with Shortie here! Horoscopes are so broad and vague that when we read it we try to find ways to make it relate to us. I feel like this is the case with a lot of things in our lives. Whenever we are reading something about life or someone talking about problems, we immediately try to find the problem in our lives. When we begin to think deeper about our horoscopes we will eventually find something that is true about it. Although it takes a lot of thinking, we may find ourselves relating to our horoscopes based on the smallest detail going on in our lives.

  5. Hi Adrian,
I enjoyed reading your post because I am a Gemini, too! I personally not a follower of my horoscope but it’s pretty cool that yours was accurate. Mine was not accurate because what it described was what I encounter every other day. It said I would have a hectic day with phone calls, meetings, and arguments. This is seriously my typical day with work and living with three girls as roommates. I agree with you on the fact that horoscopes don’t have any supporting evidence and as we have learned in this class, evidence is extremely important when stating a claim or an argument.

  6. I agree with you that there has no supporting scientific evidence to prove where those words came from. I cannot deny that sometime the horoscope make accurate predictions. Like what you said, I personally do not believe in daily horoscope. The daily horoscope always makes a very general prediction about the following days or week. Because of that, I never care about what it says. My horoscope sign is Leo and I heard that Leo is always impulse and do not think before they take any actions. This is the general attitude to describe Leo and the daily horoscope is just to change some wording but mean the same thing above. Overall, I think we can absolutely change our own fortune and that’s not related to horoscope.
