Week 11 Chapter 10 Question 3

I am a business major and I find this chapter interesting because its business related. One of the topics that the book covers is marketing research. There are three components when we conduct marketing research, which are surveys, observations and experimentation.  Marketing research can help the company to learn more about their targeted group of consumers. Surveys are the most direct way to get in touch with consumer’s preference. Company or marketing firm usually conduct surveys by email, websites, phone calls, or in person survey. Observation is a method to monitor consumer’s buying preferences. We can easily find out their preferences by converting the result from observation to sets of data. Experimentation is a method to observe the effects when the variables of a product are being changed. Marketing research is only good for learning what products have the most chance to succeed in that market; however, it does not guarantee 100% success to that particular product. Even though it can only predict an approximate result, companies still use marketing research for their own reference.

Week 11 Chapter 10 Question 2

Margo G. Wootan and Robert Liodice has different perspectives on should the government has regulation on food commercials or not. Wootan supports the idea because he thinks there are too many children with obesity. Therefore, the government should have regulations on food manufacturers marketing strategies. However, Liodice does not support the way the Wootan's claim. He believes regulating commercials by manufacturers violate the first amendment, which states that everyone in the U.S. have freedom of speech. After reviewing both arguments, I think Liodice has better argument on the issue. He points out there arr varies problems of  “Guidelines for Responsible Food Marketing to Children” by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). He also states that government should find alternatives to solve obesity. I think he analyzed the issue thoroughly while Wootan only states his stance. Consequently, I think Liodice’s statement is more trustable and better!

Week 11 Chapter 10 Question 1

I saw quite a few advertisements last week. The most effective is the one Apple introduces their latest iPad mini. Apple has their latest product on the billboard everywhere over the country. They also have commercials to inform consumers about their latest launched product. I think they did a great job because their advertisement spreads all over the country, which helps everyone to learn more about their product. The least effective commercial I think is Toyota Prius, because during the TV advertisement, there was a song and it was kind of annoying. I do not think that the advertisement helps consumer to learn more about the product, but they will find it annoying. Moreover, they might feel annoyed about the product and they will not purchase it. Because of the negative outcome after I saw the advertisement, I think it is the least effective ad I have seen in the past week.

Week 9 Question 2

Edward U. Condon was a physicist at the University of Colorado. In his writing, I noticed he claimed that UFO is a fruitful field to conduct studies on, however, he could not find sufficient information to proof the existence of UFO. He still encouraged scientists, who find adequate information to lead them for further studies, should continue their studies. He believes media makes UFO a bigger priority to people in the country. The second research was J. Allenhynek conducted by a consultant for the U.S. Air Force, claimed there is a possibility that UFO exists. He believes scientists have to conduct more research on UFO to check the validity. The third research, by Royston Paynter discusses that UFO might or might not exists. He encourages scientist to collect sufficient evidence and reasoning to seek for the fact. I believe Paynter is more trustable because he is open-minded and not bias on both sides. He also urge that scientists who conduct the study should collect sufficient info to proof the existence or nonexistence.

Week 9 Chapter 4 Question 3

In chapter 4, I would like to discuss experts and credibility when you evaluate the evidence in depth. There is many information everywhere, and we have to determine whether it is accurate or inaccurate. One of the way to determine it is an accurate statement by finding the reference or source. Often time if you find something that are written or edited by an expert, that particular document is most likely reliable and accurate. The reason why we trust those experts are they have sufficient knowledge and have done a great amount of studies on the issues. Therefore, experts are usually professors or lecturers in that field, people that have good reputation in that field, people that have done extensive studies in that field or have won awards, and people who have numerous experience in that field. For instance, when I am drafting my paper for a business class, I am likely to find some proposals that are done by experienced businessmen, or maybe find a paper that is done by an award-winning professor. That can verify the validity and accuracy of the piece of evidence I am using or learning.

Week 9 Capter 4 Question 1

Knowledge is the things we learned and discovered in our daily life, including learned from school, mentor, teachers, parents, etc. Wisdom is how one uses the knowledge and applies it in daily life wisely. Wisdom can also be gained from experience or mistakes. For instance, I learned all the business law knowledge and theory from my business class. When I become a lawyer, that is the time when I learn how to apply my knowledge to my career, and that is called wisdom. I think knowledge and wisdom is both essential for college students because knowledge is the materials we learn from school and one of the purposes of attending college is to be a wiser. Nowadays, Internet and all other sources have become more approachable to everyone. We can learn all the things and what are going on instantly by checking the latest news. We gain various experiences by surfing on the Internet, and learning different materials in a more approachable way. Therefore, I think the informative age helped us to be wiser and knowledgeable.
