Week 2 Discussion Question 1

After reading the same sex marriage article, I believe president Barack Obama is not supporting nor opposing homosexual marriages. On one hand the government is opposing to the marriage, but he is backing up same sex marriage on the other hand. He is contradicting himself because he does not want to lose voters from both sides. Therefore, you can say he is natural, but I think he will not clearly state his stance because he is afraid of losing majority of voters.  Gays and lesbians are not having equal rights because he is opposing same sex marriage on the government level. I do not think Obama will respond to Nava and Dawidoff's argument because whichever side he supports, he will lose voters on the other side in the upcoming election which he does not wish that happens. I personally think that if Obama has to choose a side, he would support same sex marriage because he is supporting the majority in the civil unions, which can directly help him to gain more votes.

  1. Hello Adrian,
I see how you can say he is neutral in this argument and its true he pretty much has to be. Like you stated which ever way he supports he will lose support on the other and vise versa. Being president doesn't seem as easy as it did while we were growing up. Most little kids say they want to be the president of the united states. Oblivious to the fact that being president is a difficult job. Now we see that the president is faced with issues that demand a great deal of critical thinking which is what Obama is demonstrating here. Good post Adrian.

    Heisenberg.
